Endurance training for hiking
The chief objective of endurance training is to maximize energy production so that it meets the demands of a sport be it hiking or football or basketball. Ultimately, performance has to peak on the D-day of the competition. This requires training in advance and not just sport-specific training but overall fitness training and endurance training. Hiking is simply walking through the country for recreational reasons. It can mean walking through your neighborhood in a single day or it could mean walking for 2-3 weeks in mountainous region. Hiking is known by different names in different places. It is called backpacking in some places, trekking in others, bushwhacking in Australia and so and so forth. It requires some knowledge as well as ability on the part of the hiker to successfully hike through a desired region. Hiking in an advanced form is a stepping stone for other outdoor activities such as mountaineering, survival skills, camping etc. A hiking expert is one who is physically fit, has knowledge to help him survive outdoors and can deal with whatever comes his way. In other words he can rapidly assimilate problems and find out solutions to them. Fitness can be measured by measuring the volume of oxygen taken in during maximum exercising. It is certainly required for the hiker to have high endurance levels. A dedicated hiker should follow a disciplined endurance training program. A beginner needs to prepare for hiking by slowly getting his body acquainted to exercises. Do not ever exercise so much that you collapse due to exhaustion. Start your endurance training by going for 3-4 km hikes about twice a week without a backpack. Slowly increase your distance till you can easily cover 15-20 km distance in a day. Now increase the weight of your backpack progressively till you can carry a 10 kg backpack comfortably on a 15 km hike. This is the most basic training for hiking. This increases the overall fitness level of the hiker and suitable for day-long hikes. But for longer hikes, it is necessary to have intensive endurance training before embarking on any such trip. Hiking makes use of specific muscle fibers in particular ways. For example, an uphill hike uses different muscles than an upward hike. Each step that the hiker takes is taken against gravity. This is very similar to weight training. Hence, it is essential for hikers to undergo weight training before they can start any intensive hiking.
